Super Red Dragon Flowerhorn

My SRD Flowerhorn.....

My next pet is my SRD or Super Red Dragon.  He is a flowerhorn and belongs to the cichlid family.  It is said that they bring good luck.  There are markings that run along the side of this fish and they call them flowers.  These markings resemble Chinese characters and are said to be lucky.  The SRD is extremely aggressive and normally should be kept alone in his own tank.  If you can get a tank big enough then you may house them with other fish that will protect themselves and are not small enough to become a meal.  The Flowerhorn is actually a man made fish created through selective breeding.  Another special thing is the fishes origin, they cannot be found in the wild and no Flowerhorn looks exactly alike. This means once you buy your Flowerhorn nobody else will have one that looks like yours.

The SRD has a big red hump on his head called a Kok. The bigger the Kok the more the fish is worth.  The colors on these fish are absolutely stunning.  I am a Flowerhorn addict and someday would like to breed them.  My SRD is housed in a 80 gal tank and his housemates include assorted cichlid that are to big to eat and to fast to get caught and killed.  The Flowerhorn will greet you every time you go near his tank and can be taught to follow your finger as you run it back and forth along the glass of his tank.  I hand feed him sometimes and he allows me to touch him and pet his body.  Sometimes however he just decides to bite me.  The Flowerhorn is like my mini Pitt Bull in a tank.  One of my favorite fish in the world.  I will get into the different breeds in my next post enjoy the photo of him for now.
